Many homeowners’ pride and joy is their healthy, green lawn. Having one takes skill, knowledge, and an understanding of what makes grass thrive. In this blog, we’ll share a piece of that knowledge with you–the ins and outs of lawn fertilization.
We all know that regular lawn maintenance is essential for a beautiful outdoor space. But did you know that you may be working harder instead of smarter? You don’t need to be a lawn enthusiast to take good care of your grass. Let’s go over what fertilizer is, a few types of fertilizer, and the benefits of adding it to your lawn care routine.
What Is Lawn Fertilizer?
Fertilizer is food. It’s the vitamins and nutrients grass needs to stay lush and green. These nutrients are found in soil, but not all soil is created equal. Deficiencies exist, and weak soil can result in patchy lawns. In order to ensure a good growth environment, fertilizer is recommended.
Key Nutrients in Fertilizer
The most vital nutrients to grass are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Because of this, the majority of lawn fertilizers contain them. You can check for this by looking for the “N-P-K ratio” on the label. Three numbers will be shown, representing the level of each nutrient. At Ehlinger Lawn Care, we use a (insert N-P-K ratio of fertilizer). At times, it is recommended to include additional nutrients, depending on your lawn’s condition. Consult a professional for help.
Each nutrient contributes something different, which are:
- Nitrogen (N): Nitrogen makes your lawn green, promoting leaf and blade growth.
- Phosphorus (P): Essential for new growth, phosphorus encourages root development.
- Potassium (K): The overall health of the grass is supported by potassium, which works to make your grass more resistant to stress and the elements.
Types of Lawn Fertilizer
To account for different soil types and different desires by homeowners, a variety of fertilizers exist and are used in lawn care. The best type for your lawn depends strongly on your location and grass type. Here are the four types we’ve seen most often. In our lawn services, we use a combination of liquid and granular fertilizers.
1. Granular Fertilizer: Granular fertilizers are applied with a spreader, come in solid pellets. These pellets contain a slow-release formula for nutrients, allowing them to disperse into the soil over time to reduce the frequency of required maintenance. When using granular fertilizer, it is important to apply it with care and professionalism. Uneven application can cause patchy growth.
2. Liquid Fertilizer: Liquid fertilizers are sprayed onto the lawn. These quick-acting treatments act fast, providing a great option for spot treatment and quick fixes. Liquid fertilizer can get expensive when used exclusively, which is why we use it in combination with granular fertilizer. Different fertilizers serve different purposes, and liquid fertilizer allows us greater flexibility in providing great results.
3. Organic Fertilizer: Got a green thumb? Organic fertilizer is made from natural sources like compost, manure, or bone meal. This fertilizer works by adding nutrients into the soil through organic matter. This option can be expensive, though DIY options are possible with a little elbow grease.
4. Synthetic Fertilizer: The counter to organic options, chemically engineered fertilizers are manufactured for targeted consistency. They deliver on their promises, providing quick green growth, but be cautious when using them. Overuse can harm your lawn, your soil, and the surrounding environment through nutrient runoff.
The Benefits of Fertilizing Your Lawn
Fertilization makes lawns vibrant and resistant to hardship. Here are the main benefits we’ve seen from clients who decide to add a fertilizer service to their lawns.
1. Lusher, Greener Grass: Fed grass grows greener. Providing proper nutrients to your grass gives it the food it needs to grow its best. Healthy, green growth will make your lawn look full, bright, and well-cared for.
2. Stronger Roots: As a result of phosphorus found in most fertilizers, your lawn is more resistant to patchiness and bad weather. Strong roots absorb water and nutrients more effectively, making fertilizer have compounding benefits. When your grass is healthy, you’ll get the most bang for your buck.
3. Weed and Pest Resistance: Thick grass deters weeds. Weeds have no space to grow when grass is already growing strongly. As a bonus, the denser soil will create an additional barrier for pests.
4. Improved Drought Tolerance: Healthy, strong grass has greater potential to survive hot, dry summers. With better root systems, the grass can absorb more water and survive on less.
5. Faster Recovery from Damage: No matter the cause, bounce back quicker. Whether from foot traffic, a pet’s favorite spot, or harsh weather, a properly fertilized lawn can recover more quickly and evenly when it takes a hit.
A thick, green, and healthy lawn doesn’t happen by accident. A green lawn is a point of pride for good reason. It takes time and dedication to achieve such a feat. Fertilizer is a vital tool that many homeowners miss out on. Used correctly, it will transform your lawn into a beautiful, healthy environment.
